Summer program keeping kids off the streets in Glassell Park

On Saturday night, I visited the Summer Night Lights program at Glassell Park. The program was launched by the mayor last year and is similar to the At the Park After Dark program we created at the Glassell Park Recreation Center in 2007 to give young people a safe, supervised place to go during the late summer evening hours.

Since the program's inception, young people in the neighborhood have had opportunities to participate in some great activities and this year is no exception. When I visited, I saw kids playing soccer, taking part in a beading jewelry workshop, and playing video games on an outdoor system. A few lucky participants won tickets to a Dodgers game.

Summer Night Lights continues until Labor Day weekend. For more information about locations and schedules, click here.
